[March 2026, Moscow] The Spring Festival is a tradition deeply rooted in Chinese culture. When this rich Eastern festive spirit travels across mountains and seas to meet Moscow’s snow-covered winter, it creates a warm and romantic cultural encounter.

During the Spring Festival of the 2026 Year of the Horse, Moscow and Beijing for the first time launched a coordinated twin-city celebration, jointly ushering in the season of spring. The “Moscow Spring Festival” reached a record scale, spanning more than 60 venues across the city and attracting a record 1.7 million visitors, making it one of the largest international cultural events ever held in the Russian capital.

At the same time, the Moscow Winter Farewell Festival 莫斯科送冬节was held in Beijing from 19 to 22 February. More than one hundred artists presented over eighty performances combining Russian folk heritage and contemporary elements.

This deep cultural resonance not only stimulated Chinese tourists’ enthusiasm for traveling to Russia, but also vividly demonstrated the Russian public’s strong interest in and warm sentiment toward Chinese culture.

Red Square and the nearby Manezhnaya Square, serving as the central venue of the celebrations, presented a visual spectacle that transcended national borders. As night fell, more than a thousand red lanterns illuminated the historic heart of Moscow. On the square stood a giant panda-themed festival tree and a dazzling fire-dragon tree, while a striking “Red Horse” installation symbolizing the Year of the Horse embodied vibrant energy and vitality. Among the most eye-catching installations was a symbolic “Moscow–Beijing Express” train adorned with red ribbons, representing the close cultural ties between the two capitals.

More than 100 artists from across China gathered in Moscow, presenting impressive performances of drum music, acrobatics and dragon dances. Visitors could not only browse a wide range of Chinese New Year souvenirs, but also participate in interactive traditional experiences. Inside GUM State Department Store, European architecture blended harmoniously with festive Chinese decorations. While enjoying the store’s famous ice cream, visitors could also send holiday greetings through a Chinese-style post office set up in Manezhnaya Square, with more than 40,000 postcards crossing mountains and seas to deliver warm wishes from Moscow to China.

Bolotnaya Square: A Fusion of Urban Life and Immersive Intangible Heritage

The Spring Festival market at Bolotnaya Square brought the fusion of Chinese culture and lively urban life to a new height. As one of the key venues of the “Moscow Spring Festival” celebrations, the square became an ideal destination for immersive experiences of traditional Chinese culture. Gift workshops and handicraft markets carefully arranged across the square were bustling with activity, while colorful Chinese knot ornaments, delicate paper-cutting artworks and a variety of Year-of-the-Horse cultural products attracted numerous local residents.

Cultural interactions at Bolotnaya Square extended throughout the broader urban landscape. More than 150 restaurants across Moscow introduced Chinese-inspired menus, while the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Metro Line operated themed trains decorated with festive lanterns and works by Chinese poets. At the “Spring Festival Time” gala held at the food market DEPO (Depo Food Mall), Shaolin martial arts performances and an erhu solo of the famous piece Horse Racing received enthusiastic applause. Chefs from Hangzhou also hosted culinary masterclasses, sharing the techniques behind classic dishes such as Kung Pao Chicken and Dongpo-style braised beef ribs with local diners. This deeply immersive cultural experience made the Spring Festival in Moscow not only a visual celebration, but also a meaningful exchange of lifestyles and traditions.

At Russia’s oldest botanical garden—the Apothecary Garden of Lomonosov Moscow State University—the Spring Festival took on a tranquil and healing aesthetic. Founded in 1706, the garden decorated its subtropical greenhouse with red lanterns and festive dragon lights, where orchids and lush greenery appeared even more vibrant beneath the warm glow. The accompanying “Spring Rehearsal” flower exhibition brought thousands of tulips and daffodils into bloom indoors ahead of the season, symbolizing renewal and the arrival of spring. While snow blanketed the outdoors, the greenhouse blossomed with vibrant colors, turning this “Eastern oasis” into a warm refuge in the heart of winter. Meanwhile, the giant pandas at the Moscow Zoo also received specially prepared festive gifts, further strengthening the emotional bond between the two peoples.
